What Backup Exec system files do you backup?

I don't back up any of the Backup Exec files found in Program Files, this might be wrong but my thoughts are that if anything goes wrong I need to re-install the server and BE anyway!

I think some of these files contain your backup jobs/tasks and I back them up so I don't have to recreate these tasks.

ON daily schedule is better to backup Bedb.bak file and the Catalog folders some information

• "C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Data\bedb.bak"
• "C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs\*.*

BEDB.BAK file contains all your jobs , schedules and inventoried volumes. Catalogs folders contains information about data and media used.

Also the C:\Windows\BESERNUM.XML file should be backuped , it contains your license keys for Backup Exec.

But In case you have to reinstall the Backup Exec server ( i.e. for Disaster Recovery...) , take a look on this document : How to uninstall and reinstall Backup Exec 10.x for Windows Servers and preserve user defined settings .

Might it just be the "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Data" folder that contains the necessary files?

I did a complete backup of our Backup Server the other day and the BE job didn't return any errors generated by open files in the "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\" folder.

Now you got me interested in the question, I am searching though Google now :-)

When I backup everything in the catalogs directory, I get warning messages that some files "are in use - file skipped". This is what I am trying to eliminate. Any suggestions?

If you back up everything in the "Data" folder, you will get the same warning messages I mentioned...again, this is what I am trying to eliminate.

About license file , for the different BE versions read also the document : Where does Backup Exec store the licensing information

I have a batch job scheduled that copy these files in a special backup folder. So you will have only to backup all files in this folder without any issues.

Can you tell me which files you backup? The data, catalog, and log folders all add new files when the backup runs (I imagine symantec creates new files everytime it executes a task), so how do you keep your backup folder current without copying these newly created files?

I just tested it again, created a new BE job and select the folder "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec", it completed without exceptions. I just checked the job history and the "Advanced Open File Option" was not used.
It's strange that you get errors but not me. I am using BE 12.5 with all the available updates.

I am running Symantec Backup Exec 12 for windows servers. I don't know why you did not get any messages about files being in use and skipped; I don't use the "Advances Open File Option" either.
