why so many "64.0 KB of 50.0 GB" entries in dedup storage folder?

I have "328 MEDIA FULL" entries in DEDUPLICATION STORAGE FOLDER,

I have "176 APPENDABLE" entries in DEDUPLICATION STORAGE FOLDER,

and "64.0 KB of 50.0 GB " entries in DEDUPLICATION STORAGE FOLDER.

  • After talking to tech support......I gave up and wiped the disk clean and started from scratch with a

    NEW and EMPTY de-dup folder, ran FULL backups over the weekend.

    From what they said, de-dup doesn't append.

    Every time a new job starts, it creates a new file and goes into overwrite mode.

    At least tape jobs know how to append.

    Now, there are:

    70 64KB of 50GB files;

    164 (FULL) 50GB of 50GB, and;

    21 (not full) "appendable?"

  • As per the design Dedup creates OST files each of 50GB. Initially there will be no OST files

    in the dedup folder, once you fire a backup job 10 OST files will be created each of 50GB.

    Depending on the media set selected for a backup job the OST files will be overwritable

    and appendable. As per your post you have the below OST files

    328 MEDIA FULL - these OST files are full(50GB) and they may be overwrite protected or overwritable

    176 APPENDABLE - these OST files are appenable and will be use if the jobs are configured to append.

    64.0 KB of 50.0 GB - scratch OST files which will be used for any overwritable jobs.

    Note: 10 -20 blank OST files is a normal scenario, there should not be excess of these files else

    you will run short of space on the dedup folder.

  • Solution 1: (SP1) failed, "This update could not be installed"

    Solution 2: LiveUpdate 3.3 is 32-bit. Is there a 64-bit version?

    Also, after updating SP1 successfully, will I have to do something

    else, or will ALL the extra OST files go away(there are over 800)?

  • After installing the SP check the behavior of dedup. Also click on Tools->Options->Media

    management-> select "use recycable media before using scratch media" so that the OST

    files whose retention period has ended will be used for next overwrite operation.

  • Hi Thomas,

    If you run a repair of your installation through Add/Remove Programs, it will repair any issues in your installation, including LiveUpdate.

    Give that a go and see if this resolves your LU issue.

    Laters!
