Windows SBS 2011 crashed during windows updates no has no text on desktop
Long story short, Windows updates were being run on a 3 month old Windows SBS 2011. During the updates the server started to lockup, it then crashed(most likely blue screen wasn't there to see it.) On reboot the server showed one of the drives in the raid had failed, status as degraded. (Raid 5 with four drives and three partitions.) So I continued to boot into windows however Microsoft loading bar would come up then windows would blue screen before the login screen could come up. The blue screen stated to start windows in directory restore mode. Safe mode didn't work, multiple restarts did nothing. Finally in directory restore mode I ran a restore of the system state (using Symantec backup exec) It took about 4 hours to complete(the raid was still degraded at this point) At about 68 percent it gave a warning about having to restart the server. However, after pressing ok it jumped straight to 100 percent.
So now windows loads up. We can log in remotely. However, keyboard input does not work locally, virtual keyboard does. Local computers can connect to exchange, and shared folders seem to be accessible. However, exchange is not sending out or receiving emails externally. The major issue at this point is the state of the server desktop screen(see attatched photo) No programs show any text. Interestingly intel rapid storage manager does when open. But it is as if buttons are in the right place, but since there is no text everything is squished together. I have never seen anything like this before.
I finally got a new drive and began rebuilding the raid. The server is even slower than before. Rebuild is about 55 percent done. My next step after the rebuild is possibly running windows sfc command or checking out the graphics drivers. I have yet to boot into safe mode, it may act the same way. Anyway, I am asking if any has any ideas whatsoever. I would really want to avoid a reinstall, it took a few days to configure the server with all of the software our client uses. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Kennedy,
I see you marked this as BE 12.5-related. If so, BE 12.5 doesn't support Microsoft SBS 2011, and only goes up to SBS 2008...which is why you could be experiencing issues.
If it isn't BE 12.5, I'd suggest you make the necessary change to the product by hitting the Edit button above.
Thanks!
