Write Protect Error v12.5

Hi there

I'm getting a problem with our backup.... It's only started recently. Nothing has happened re: updates on the server, but we cant write a tape. Initially the Job Engine hung and re setit to start as a local system service rather than a user account. Now when the backup job begins to run, we have an issue with the backup writing to the media. We get the message that the tape is write protected. This happens any tape we use. The write protect tab is in the writable position. This is a HP Storage Words Dat 72 on Windows 2008 and Symantec 12.5. The media are in a media set with the overtwrite and append set to 1 hour. I can format the tapes with no problems.

Any ideas? I've asked HP support for their comments. I've attached an image below.

Cheers

  • I guess the job is configured to overwrite and its failing as the tape is overwrite protected.

Move the tape to the scratch media set and then run the backup job.

  • In addition to above, other reasons could be:

    - tape media is not compatible with the drive...

    - media is "physically" write protected...

  • Check the settings about media management in tools and options .

  • Hi Guys

We'll HP created a ticket. We were able to test the media and the drive with no problems.

    still getting the same error.

However, even though I associated the tape with a media set with and overwrite and append period of one hour, and assigned it to the backup job. When I went to tools>options, it seemed the default job was to never append. Any other ideas?

    Cheers

  • You should be checking the job properties, to make sure that it is set to overwrite and not the default in Tools --> Options.

However, you should go to Tools ---> Options ---> Media Management and check that the Overwrite Protection Level is set to either Partial (default) or Full.

  • Move the tape to Scratch media, it should shows in blue colour and say over-writable

and you should be able to over-wrire it.

Also try disableing following service and try backup again:

      -  HP Insight Server Agents
       -  HP Insight Storage Agents
       -  HP Insight Foundation Agents

       -  HP WMI Storage Providers service

  • We'll nether solution has worked. Created a new backup job, new media set, new tape. Try to write to the tape and we have an unknown error now... Event ID 34113
