How to install SFHA on multiple systems ?

Hi All

I have a task to install SFHA on multiple systems however I may nt be able to install all of sevrers together as servers are getting built one after other. I don't want to waste time in waiting for all servers to build & then do the instalation ... can anyone point to me any me other best method ?

  • Hi,

Have you had a look at the VCS install guide ? There is a method to install using response files, refer below link

    https://sort.symantec.com/public/documents/sfha/6.1/solaris/productguides/html/vcs_install/pt05.htm

Also, there was recently an article posted which is also useful

  • Actually response files may not help:

There are 2 parts to the installation:

    1. Installation of packages
    2. Configuration of software - SF and VCS

If when you run the installer you enter all the nodes that will be in the cluster, then if some are not built yet, then the installer will fail and I am pretty sure if you use reponse files, you will get the same result.

So, if when you run the installer you enter only the nodes you have built so far, then you have the choice of:

    1. Doing install only and running configure when you have all nodes built
    2. Doing install and configure a cluster with less nodes than ultimate goal and then manually add additional nodes to the cluster.

If you do just the install, then you may save a little time using response files, but you don't have to answer many questions for install only and actually you have to edit response file, even for an install only as you can't say "install packages on this node" - you have to edit the resonse file to put in the node name.

Also, if you run the installer when you have all systems, then it doesn't take that much longer than installing just intalling the final single system as it installs in parallel, so it only takes slightly longer as it has to copy the packages to the other nodes first, but then they will install in parallel, so with a decent network - this only takes an extra minute or 2, so you will spend a lot longer trying to cluster before yo uhave all nodes available.

So in essence, if you don't have all your nodes available, response files are not really going to help you - response files are really meant for if you are instaling multiple clusters.

Where you can save time is if you start doing the manual configuration after the base configuration the installer does - i.e create your diskgroups and filesystem and application service groups and install your application on the nodes you have got so far.

  • Hi G,

Your quick response indeed save my time and help me to achieve my target. I have successfully installed VCS on 22 nodes with the help of response file and minimal manual intervention.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your guidance which I check today. That will really help for future requirement.

I would like to appreciate you all for your valuable response and guidance on this forum.

    Cheers....
