Mysterious system file appears under C:\Windows after Clearwell installation

This is very strange: a mysterious large system file of 5GB to 18GB size with a random file name appears right after  Clearwell 9.0 installation on brand new Windows Server 2012 R2. We've also seen file names with Chinese characters under C:\Windows which almost gave us a heart attact :-(

I am able to reproduce this on both clean Clearwell 8200 appliance and VM installations. There is no networking so this is not coming from outside. Basically I am installing a clean Windows Server 2012 R2 then following Clearwell installation guide for pre-requisities, and then install Clearwell. I have a good working Clearwell appliance, no errors during setup, mysterious file appears right after reboot.

Has anyone seen this behaviour or know why this might be happening? Could you please check your Clearwell installations' C:\Windows folder (make sure to check "hide protected operating system files" option in Explorer options first, then sort file listing by size). Following is a screen shot from our installation. This file does not exist on any other Windows servers, only on Clearwell. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ali

  • Hi Ali_G,

Would you be able to raise a support case for this?

I haven't seen this before & I don't see anything documented around it. We may need to capture a process monitor capture to see exactly where it's coming from and what is touching the files.

Hi Daly, yes we did, after days of troubleshooting, we were recommended to check "Virtual Memory" settings under System - Advanced - Performance Options. All our appliances has "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" unchecked. Once we checked that box and rebooted, mysterious file disappeared.

Just FYI, I've tested this on a brand new 9.1 installation and its still there. You might want to take this up with your product teams. A clean installed 9.1 appliance has VM setting unchecked and has that file under C:\Windows

Question is: Why Clearwell installation is changing VM settings and creates random file under C:\Windows, and is it safe to check "Automatically manage paging size" setting after Clearwell installation?

      Thank you

      Ali
