Additional EV Archiving Server

Hello Folks,

I have installed a new EV server to hold some of the 'Mailbox Archiving Tasks' from the existing EV server.

And i want to use the existing VaultStore to be used and maybe same or different partition.

The problem here is that i can't use the Storage/Index service of the new EV server, is there any way we can setup 2 EV archiving server to use same VaultStore with their own index located locally?

If its not possible to achieve what i am looking for then if i just delete few archiving task from old server and create them on the new EV server would that make any difference in the performance?

Basically we are enabling Quota+Age based archiving and have plenty of backlog which has not yet been archived so the idea was to introduce a new EV server move some tasks and increase the archiving window with more items to be processed per schedule.

  • As I have said previously, having one EV Storage service doing the work will be your bottleneck.

You options as I see it, you could target larger mailboxes with run nows to get them down quicker.  You could also let EV run on the weekend for longer a period of time to get the mailboxes archived.

  • What version of EV?

How many users are you going to be archiving?

How many archive task do you have?

If you delete the archive task and move it to the other EV Server you will also have to move the archives from their current Vault Store to a new Vault Store or other wise the original Storage service will continue to do the work.

  • EV version is 8.0.3

Users are around 4000 accross the organization.

On the old EV server it had 11 archiving task from which i moved 2 on the newly installed EV server.

I would like both the EV server to use the same VaultStore and maybe their own seperate Index to speed up the archiving process?

Right now my VaultStore is only tied to the old EV server and im still using the old servers (Storage & Index) service and the new server just runs the 2 tasks.... :(

  • Well, even if you move the indexes as in the following technote Storage on the original EV Server is still going to be your bottle neck.

Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51450 There is a section for moving individual indexes.

Honestly, I think the best option is create new Vault Store that is part of the same Vault Store Group so you will still get OSIS.  Upgrade to EV 9 and then you could use Move Archive after you move the archive task to move them to a different vault store on the new EV Server.

I would recommend you engage a consulting company to help you evaluate and if necessary help you rebalance your environment.

  • Upgrading to Enterprise Vault to 9 is not a option for me at this point :(

What if let it run like this 2 EV host archiving task and the old server's storage & index does the writing..??

The Storage & Indexes are on SAN and we can still use that!

All we need is to make the archiving process happen effeciently so that the backlog is cleared and age+quota works as expected.
