Archiving Task failure to start EventID 3305, 2256

I'm having some issues getting my Exchange 2010 Mailbox tasks to start.

EV 9.03 and Exchange 2010 SP3

Upgraded Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 on EV server that handles Exc2010 tasks.

I've created all the system mailboxes on each MB server and placed them in the 1st database on the server (we have 4 on each).

I've run the Permissions script for Exchange, Throttling Script and a PS to apply Send As rights to each System Mailbox.

Deployment Scanner run through just now showed no issues (apart from the usual Lotus Notes - and we don't use it!).

I've looked at the following Technote with no success: enterprise vault EvtID=150585

Really stumped now and this is holding up EV deployment to our Exchange 2010 users.

  • Well... it turns out the issue was related to one of CAS servers having RPC client service stopped.

However now I find that even though the tasks are running, OWA users seem to be hit and miss getting the OWA extenstions. Also ones that do get it, are not able to restore from vault. Says items are unavaible.

  • Forgot to mention. Exchange 2010 is currently in co-exist mode with Exchange 2003 as we run a migration. Other EV servers in Site are handling these archives and tasks.

  • Can you grab the contents of the actual events?  ie the text, and error message.

Can you open the System Mailbox from the EV server?

Did you apply 2007 SP 3 + hotfixes mentioned in the Compatibility Guide?

  • Sorry yes is Outlook 2007 + SP3  and no cannot open the mailbox on the EV Server (had to create new profile etc), didn't notice this before. Errors on saying Exchange is not available... which it is! Need to investigate this.

    Yes

The Archiving Task 'Exchange Mailbox Archiving Task for WB2-MBX-P0004' could not be started due to startup errors.

The Task 'Exchange Mailbox Archiving Task for WB2-MBX-P0004' failed to log on to Exchange server 'WB2-MBX-P0004' using mailbox 'SMTP:WB2-MBX-P0004EVX@virginmedia.co.uk'. Please ensure the mailbox has not been hidden, that the server is running and that the Vault account has sufficient permissions on the server.

  • Okay ..  well once you get the System Mailbox open with Outlook I'm sure you'll be all set.

Make sure Outlook isn't trying to connect using RPC/HTTP (aka Outlook Anywhere) .. and make sure 'online' mode is set in the profile, rather than cached.

  • Exchange 2010 tasks are all on one individual server yeah? so they don't have any 2007 servers on there?
If thats the case, try using the "DS Server" registry key and specifying GC://YourCASServer.yourdomain.com

i.e. specifically target a CAS Server and not a GC server
