Collections and Migrations

Normally I wouldn't use collections, but am required to use migrations to tape.  Will be doing file archiving as well as Exchange archiving.

Assuming I leave the collection sizes to the default of 10mb, I have a couple of questions:

  1. Will files larger than 10mb be added to a .cab file? (I'm thinking this is a yes since I've seen .cab files much larger than the size setting)
  2. If not, will they be migrated?
  • Not all files will get migrated so for instance is EV detects one file in a directory it will not put that in a cab file and if it's not in a cab file, it will not migrate it 10mb is just the default size for a cab though you can make it bigger, Juliet be aware that the bigger the cab gets typically the more items it stores, the more items it stores the more you'd lose if it became corrupt Honestly though I think it's one of those gray area questions, I'm not entirely what it would do, logic says that if it encountered a 50mb DVF file it would not collect them, but how it would react with a 9mb DVSSP and a 2mb DVSSP Im not entirely sure

  • The collections does not collect files greater than 5MB by default.  Large files thus are also not migrated.

  • Large files 50 MB will not get collected, they will have an extension of .DVF

During the migration process, all cabs that meet criteria will be migrated as well as large files (dfv's).  So you may have a rare file left behind as JW2 states, but cabs and large files will go.

Just keep in mind these file that go to tape need to be in the library or drive when recalled.  This Migration process is for Rarely used files.  If you send tapes off to Iron mountain than this is not a process you want to use.

  • Thanks for the clarification.  The customer has a very large tape library and anticpates having tapes either in the library or readily available.

So, from what I'm understanding, .cab files will be migrated along with large files (>50mb) with the .DVF extensions according to the migration settings on the vault store partition.

From what I've been able to tell with .cab files, they seem to work like this: saveset files are added to a .cab file as long as the .cab file is smaller than the configured size, however those .cab files aren't limited to that size and often end up larger.  For example, I've seen .cab files that are 21mb or so, even though the setting is to use 10mb collection files.  When I open the .cab to see what's in there, it looks like there is a 12mb file with the newest date and older files that add up to around 9mb.

So if files >50mb aren't collected, how about files that are say 30mb or so?  Will they be added to a .cab file with only that one file inside?

  • Cabs will never contain single items, it will always leave them in their source directory
