Enterprise Vault 2007 and Exchange 2003\2007 Co-Existence

Hello all,

I have a rather general question as regards the above scenario.  We are using EV SP4 and are just now introducing Exchange 2007 mailbox servers into our environment.  We have a parent Domain where our OWA 2003 frontend and Exchange 2007 HUB\CAS servers are installed and will soon be publishing OWA to only be accessed via the Exchange 2007 HUB\CAS server (For both Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 based users). Currently OWA is published through ISA for external access and accessed by internal users from the Child Domains by the parent domain based Frontend Server (OWA2003 box)

We then have a Child Domain where all of our Backend Exchange Servers for 2003 are installed and also where we have our Exchange 2007 Mailbox and another HUB\CAS Server (Every AD site requires a HUB\CAS Server).

Are there any Symantec Docco's around that explain how to co-exist EV 2007 in an Exchange 2003/2007 environment?

Also, a more straightforward question, are there any problems with Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 mailbox users accessing their EV items through the Exchange 2007 CAS server only (We will be getting rid of the 2003 Server very soon). Basically, I assume that you need to have Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 extensions installed on the Exchange 2007 CAS Server (HUBCAS in our case) so that users can access their EV items baed on their Exchnage mailbox Server version.

  • Hi

Been there, done that...shouldn't be any issue at all. Ensure you installed the EV OWA extension on CAS server as well

    cheers!

  • Yes, this scenario should work. Do not install exchange 2003 extensions on CAS, only exchange 2007 extensions are required. Keep in mind when switching that the handling for ArchiveExplorer / Search is different now. You can't proxy it trough OWA/CAS, it has to be published. :( http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/292532.htm You may need the externalwebappurl settings in web.config for this: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/304386.htm Cheers Michel
  • I dont think you would install both extensions on the hub/cas server, it should proxy any requests for exchange 2003 mailbox's to the frontend exchange 2003 server.  you should install the respective extensions on each server.  also...the EV 8 owa extensions are backwards compatible and I know they fix some issues when publishing through ISA, so i recommend you install the ev 8 extensions on the servers.
  • Thanks for the responses guys,

So to confirm,  if I install the 2007 extensions onto both of my HUBCAS servers (We have 2 for load balancing) then EV items on both 2003 and 2007 backend Server mailboxes will be accessible from just these 2007 boxes (We will be removing the 2003 frontend OWA server and accessing OWA only from 2007).

It may be that I dont have any Exchange 2007 mailboxes enabled via EV prior to publishing OWA through only the 2007 environment. I cant think that this will have a bearing on whether or not Exchange 2003 based EV items can be retrieved through the 2007 servers do you?

  • @EV Wanabee

You will still need to have the extensions installed on on your 2003 servers as well.  The 2007 hub/cas server proxies the request to the 2003 servers for 2003 mailboxes.
  • Hey y'all

I just installed the 64 bit 2007 extensions onto my local sites HUBCAS but at the moment I'm not seeing the tools through OWA.

I haven't yet run the Anonymous account script because we already have this configured for the 2003 environment, the only thing I changed was to add my local site HUBCAS IP address into ExchangeServers.txt. However, despite only doing the latter, when I first installed the extensions and then logged onto OWA I DID see the tools.

I then tried to use them to restore an item but it didn't quite work (Showed the correct box to allow me to archive but MY Vault archive wasn't showing, could be timing issue).

When I logged off and on again however the tools dissapeared and then I started to get an OWA error message which I now cannot get rid of despite uninstalling and re-installing extensions (Outlook Web Access was unable to perform the operation that you requested). The latter could be another problem as I dont get the error in mozilla, but I still cant see the EV tools in OWA at present.

Any ideas (other than making sure i run the Anonymous user script?)

Also, can I clarify whether I need to install the OWA2003FE extensions onto my CAS servers in order for 2003 mailbox users to access EV via the 2007 CAS boxes? Or will the OWA2007 64bit extensions on the CAS Servers allow both 2007 and 2003 mailbox access (The 2003 mailbox servers will currently have the EV2007 OWA extensions installed on them, there will be no 2003FE servers left).
