Enterprise Vault 2007 Backups

Hello All,

I have a query in relation to EV 2007 backups taking too long to complete.

We are using NBU with backup scripts to backup the files.

What can we do to speed-up the process? I mean if we have some changes / tweaks / manipulations / settings that we can make so as to backup the information and at a better speed?

Also, in addition, is there a way to split the vault stores and move the old information to the another store and then back it up once only for future reference?

Please advise.

    That's in your experience :) My experience is a little more wider scope than yours, I have only been using Enterprise Vault on a daily bases, Consultancy & Engineering Support for about 7 years. I have done more than 150 designs for different customers, but latter supporting customers.  So the issues you have seen 7-8 times might be irrelevant to you, but just 5 months back I had to rebuild indexes for 5 months, and if i had collections enabled it would have taken me about a year I would guess. Ask any large admin of a larger site for me larger is 40,000 and see what they say about collections :)

    Hi Gauravaditya,

    I would recommend looking at closing your existing partitions and creating new ones.  This means that your closed "old"partitions are read-only and no data will be added, so don't need to be backed up on a daily bases. You will only need to backup the open partition "new" on a daily basis.

    You can consider cab files, but I personally do not like them and advise people to stay away from cabs.  It brings a whole lot of other issues, with indexing rebuilds and slow retrievals.

    why you don't like collections?
    In my experience, I use it and backup time take a little than before cab implementation.

    Have you ever tried to rebuild say 50TB of indexes that have been cabbed up? or even 1GB as a matter of fact? Its quicker to uncab the cabs re-index and cab them back up than trying to rebuild.

    What happens is as follows:

    cab_A = item_01
    Item_02
    Item_03
    Item_04
    Item_05

    cab_B = item_06
    Item_07
    Item_08
    Item_09
    Item_10

    Now when you are rebuilding it could do this:

    Open cab_a for item_01, open cab_b for item_06, open cab_a for item_02, open cab_b for item_07, open cab_a for item_03, open cab_b for item_08, open cab_a for item_04, open cab_a for item_09, open cab_a for item_05, open cab_b for item_10

    So yes, that’s just indexing. your end user experience is also bad, as the retrieval times decrease dramatically, for example you can almost grantee that if you enable collections all users will have the little blue box saying "downloading item" where as if you don’t have collections you hardly notice it if you do notice it at all.

    - Why must I rebuild index? In my  business history (I've implemented Enterprise Vault 4 years ago) I rebuild indexes 7-8 times witohout issues.
    - When I don't using collections in a directory where I stored items I could see a lot of dvs files and time to retrieve items was too long.
    When I implemented cab file time to retrieve item is better than before. (in a directory I can see 4-5 collections instead 150-250 dvs).

    My personal end user experience is to use collections method.
