Enterprise Vault as standalone?

I am trying to figure out if it's possible to disconnect Exchange from Enterprise Vault, and if those archives will still accessible from Archive Explorer. So, I have the following questions for you experts:

  1. Will the archives still be accessible from Archive Explorer even after the mailboxes have been disconnected/disassociated with each archive?
  2. Can the items from within each archive be retrieved at a later date, either by export to PST or by other means?
  3. Would Discovery Accelerator be required for any of the functions needed otherwise?

Just to help clarify the direction I am going with this, we are moving from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 however, we are not upgrading from EV8 to EV9 for continued support. Thus the EV product is being pushed aside, yet the data still needs to be accessed when needed. Any information is greatly appreciated.

  • The thing to remember as you move users to Exchange 2010 and you don't have an Archive Task you will not be able to synchronize users and this could cause some issues with permissions in the future.  You might have to manually add permissions to the archives if you lose the automatically assigned permissions so that users can still access the archives.

EV does have the built in ability to export archives to pst but it is not scripted nor automated. If you wanted to use a third party tool to do the export I would recommend shopping around. You can look at TransVault as Andrew mentions but there is also Akaibu found here: http://www.akaibu.com/index.htm and Globanet's GEM, found here: http://www.globanet.com/products-services/products-2/gem
Additionally, check with Vault-Solutions, http://www.vault-solutions.com/ and QUADROtech http://www.quadrotech-it.com/.

  • i have customers that are doing similar things as you mention and would say that it's possible based on everything i've seen. you probably want to keep the EV configuration the way it is in order to maintain permissions syncronized with AD/Exchange but you can turn the archiving schedule off and put all your archiving tasks in report mode if you'd like.

DA would only be required for eDiscovery purposes, in other words if you wanted to search across all your archives for compliance purposes, etc.

another option for you to think about would be to migrate everything out of EV so that you don't have to maintain it. we've had success doing such things for our customers as well using TransVault.

  • i must have misread the part where you state "we are not upgrading from EV8 to EV9 for continued support " which i guess implies that you're on EV8 today. take what tony said about not being able to have a task for Exchange 2010 and scratch what i said about trying to maintain permissions syncing automatically.
