Enterprise Vault, Enabling NTFS Volume Deduplication / Compression

Hello Symantec Community,

I tried to look on the technotes about possible outcome when you enable either deduplication or compression on a EV Vault Store.

I was looking into our EV and it seems that we don't have neither activated.

Enterprise Vault Version: 10.0.2.1112

First question: Not having a tick means it's not active right?

Second question: Since i don't have a DEV/UAT environment for EV, can it degrade the production environment?

Thanks in advance,

João Cardoso

  • Hello João,

If you enable these options, you would be telling EV that the storage device performs deduplication and/or compression and that would disable the features in Enterprise Vault for that specific partition. Remember that these options are per Enterprise Vault partition. By default, Enterprise Vault performs compression of the savesets and deduplication with the Single Instance Storage. If the storage device doesn't perform dedup or compression that EV will use more space in the storage to store the savesets.

    I hope this helps.

  • you are correct, not having a tick means it's not active

and yes, typically dedupe and compression both add additional overhead which can impact performance.

  • so what happens if the checkbox is enabled but the device doesn't actually supports deduplication ?

  • it turns of the feature in EV and leaves it to the storage device. if the storage doesnt do it, you end up with your data taking up more space. i never recommend setting and have never seen it used.

  • Thanks Andrew.

If the EV collection is enabled then is there any benefits of using data dedupe ?

  • Thanks for the replies, what's the most reliable way to see if the storage device supports it?

  • check with your storage team, your storage documentation, your storage licensing, your storage partner, your storage manufacturer, etc
