Enterprise Vault Shortcut Problem

Hello Guys,

We have problem with Ent. Vault 8.0.1 :

After a few days from deleting user's archives and following recovery procedures with BackupExec Agent for Enterprise Vault for MS Exchange
shortcuts for user's emails are not created in MS Outlook 2007 with EVault Outlook Add-In. In OWA and MS Outlook 2003 with EVault Outlook Add-In this problem is absent.

There is some checklist for raw level verifying of EVault parameters for solving the problem ?

Thanks a lot.

  • Just to confirm.

Are you also using your Exchange backups to restore IPM.Note.EnterpriseVault.Shortcut 's or the Whole Mailbox in question from the Point in time after the archiving of those emails?
  • Yes our Exchage mailboxes are backuped by BackupExec.
But after recovering Ent. Vault user's archives I didn't recover Exchange mailboxes because Exchange mailboxes didn't were deleted.
  • The shortcuts should still reside if they were there in the first place and mailboxes weren't deleted.

I would check to confirm if the items were archived prior to the deletion of the archive and shortcuts existed in the mailboxes it may be that your policy in ev is set not to create shortcuts or the shortcuts have been moved to another location in the mailbox you could do a search of the mailbox for message class IPM.Note.EnterpriseVault.Shortcut
  • Some notes:

All shortcuts for old archived messages remained in the mailbox, but when user is archiving the message message is archived but shortcut is not created
  • Please check to see if you Main Exchange Mailbox Archiving Policy is set to Create Shortcuts for these specific user.

See if they fall into a specific provisioning group which targets another policy that does not create shortcuts.

The reason being is that if a brick level restore of the mailbox was completed for all items then the shortcuts should have been restored as well.

Failing that shortcuts were not selected when the mailbox was archived then the other step you could take would be .

    1. Export Archive to PST
    2. Disable User
    3. Delete Archive
    4. Re-Enable User for Archiving
    5. Import PST to Archive
  • If it is not a matter of an incorrect setting in the policy, then a dtrace of the whole archiving process will help us to verify why the shortcut it is not created.

Perform a dtrace of the following process: agentclientbroker, archivetask, storagearchive, evconvertersandbox and StorageFileWatch.

In a normal archiving process the ArchivingTask will log a line similar to the following one when building the shortcut.

[6252] (ArchiveTask) <3144> EV:L :CArchivingAgent::ProcessItem() |Building the Exchange Shortcut Accessor object using the message entry ID |

The dtrace will help us if it was not something related with the policy not setup to leave shortcuts.
