EV 10 FSA Placeholder delete on delete question

What i have found from my test EV system

* If you SHIFT+Delete Placeholder - Archived file is deleted

* If you delete placeholder and then placeholder goes to recycle bin and you empty the recycle bin - archived file is not deleted

* If you recall a placeholder then delete the recalled file - archived file is not deleted

Is that normal by design?

Many Thanks

  • What is your applicable policy set to for delete on delete? (folder or volume).

Have you set up any safety folders?

What about pass-through recall - is that set up?

This was in the EV9 install and config guide:

If the volume archiving policy says delete the archived file
when the placeholder is deleted, then emptying the Recycle
Bin causes the corresponding archived item to be deleted.

EV10 has different text in the table, and refers you to another section  (p85, install and config guide):

You can configure Enterprise Vault to delete archived files
when their placeholders are deleted, if you want. You must
configure some settings for the file server, and apply an
archiving policy with the appropriate settings.
See “About configuring the deletion of archived files on
    placeholder deletion” on page 85.

    p85:

If you choose to leave placeholder shortcuts, you can configure Enterprise Vault
to delete archived files when their placeholders are deleted. You must configure
some settings for the file server, and apply an archiving policy with the appropriate
    settings.
Note that if you move placeholders to a different location, the archiving policy
that applies to the destination location determines whether the archived files are
    deleted on placeholder deletion.
For Windows file servers and NetApp filers, Enterprise Vault maintains a cache
of the "Delete archived file when placeholder is deleted" policy settings. ThisDOD
cache holds the policy setting for each local target volume and target folder,
including retention folders. For Windows file servers the DOD cache is located on

the file server. For NetApp filers the DOD cache is located on the Enterprise Vault
server. The location is not configurable.
When a placeholder is deleted on a Windows file server or a NetApp filer,
    Enterprise Vault does as follows:
    ■ It identifies the parent target folder that is closest to the folder from which
    the placeholder was deleted.
    ■ It obtains from the DOD cache the value of the "Delete archived file when
placeholder is deleted" setting that applies to the target folder.
    ■ It uses the value from the DOD cache to determine whether to delete the
archived file. If the DOD cache value specifies deletion, Enterprise Vault
    immediately deletes the archived file.
If Enterprise Vault is unable to identify the parent target folder for a deleted
placeholder, it logs an error in the event log. It does not delete the archived file.

Also, from the help in EV10:

Delete archived file when placeholder is deleted. Select this option to make Enterprise Vault delete archived files when their corresponding placeholders are deleted. For this setting to take effect with Windows and NetApp file servers, Delete archived file must be selected on the Delete Placeholder tab in the properties of the file server.

    Note:
For Windows file servers, the Delete archived file when placeholder is deleted setting is ignored if pass-through recall is enabled. For EMC Celerra file servers, do not use this setting if you configure Celerra pass-through, as the combination can lead to data loss.

So you might want to play around with folder/volume policies. If it is the same as EV9, then the DoD volume policy might apply (as the recycle bin is located on a volume) but the folder policy will not (because you dont set archive points on the recycle bin).

  • I just tried this out on my Enterprise Vault 10.0.2 system.

1/ Shift Delete Placeholder => Yes, the item and the archived item were both deleted.

2/ Delete placeholder, and empy recycle bin => this is from an end-user perspective?  on my machine deletes from network locations are not sent to the recycle bin.

3/ Recall placeholder, and delete recalled file => the archived item does not get deleted, as you pointed out.
