EV 9 Change placeholder to Shortcuts

Hi All,

I have a strange question to ask. Is it possiblt to change FSA placeholders to an internet shortcut without restoring all of the items?

Thanks

  • FSAUtility unfortunately only deals with placeholders and not internet shortcuts (at least, in EV9 sp3 which i just tested). If you want to create shortcuts then you will need to use FSAUtility to restore the items and then re-archive them using a new policy.

DFS is supported in certain configurations, but what is absolutely NOT supported is when files are being replicated. The issue being that the replication component has no idea about reparsepoints, alternate data streams etc etc so these are not carried over.

If you are using a DFS as a shared namespace then this is ok and will work.

  • Hi ZeRoC00L

Made a smal error, I mean Stub not Placeholder.

Sounds good but will it change the stub to a internet shortcut? Do I need to make the changes in the policy and then recreate the placeholder, which will then it to the internet shortcut based on the policy change?

  • OK i'm confused, you mean Exchange Shortcuts to FSA URL Placeholders?
Or do you mean regular FSA placeholders to URL Placeholders?

If its Exchange to FSA, you will have to restore the items
If its regular to URL placeholders, you will have to change the policy and have FSAUtility recreate the placeholders like zerocool mentioned

  • Sorry for any confusion.

We are working with FSA. The system is being moved to a DFS and placeholder/stubs are not supported by Symantec as per http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH47395.

So what I woud like to do is change the current placeholder/stubs to internet shortcuts so that it will be supported.

I will try the suggestion from Zerocool. Just to confirm do I need to change the policy and then recreate the policy?

  • I think so. Change the policy and run the utility on a small part of your datafolder.
