EV Migrator and file fetching

Hi all,

It appears that the EV Migrator is working well with the BE 2014.

I have successfully recovered 200Mb file which has been turned in to a placeholder and migrated to tape for long term archiving. This has only taken 9 min to do.  Not a bad effort.

My user experience is this.

When I clicked on the place holder to fetch the file it timed out without letting me know that it went to fetch the file from a tape.  Problem:  user gets confused and not sure what’s happening!

Now, how do I let my users know that the file they asking for are being fetched from a tape and it might take a bit longer to get it back?

Just trying to make the user experience more pleasurable, and less confusing.

Thanks in advance

  • It his is pretty much why I am against migration to tapes, in my time I have seen it where the tapes had short retentions and had items deleted, or shipped off site and the recall failed because it was waiting for a tape that was inaccessible Then if you need to restore a whole bunch at once or an index rebuild where it recalls everything it can be disastrous But since this is already implemented, I'll just say that you should be honest with the users and tell them that items like this that are old/rarely used etc are moved to backup tapes and that's what the hold up is when restoring them Otherwise if they believe that the product is slow hen you will get complaints and you end up having to justify why you have EV even though it's just the nature of doing anything with backups and tape etc

  • Thanks for that.

We have not yet fully implemented. We got 10 Licenses to try it out.

We are a Medical Research Institute (MRI) and we need to be able to keep the data for a long time 15+ years, some of it for the life of a patient. I don't see myself having exponential TB growth on spinning disks forever.  Some inconvenience is expected when archiving to tape. I'm sure most people don't care (at least in our org) for the time as much as about what's happening.

I don’t believe it’s the nature of tapes; it’s just “us” not programing it to do what we require. I think people have just gone crazy over HD’s due to the clever marketing from storage vendors etc…

I guess I'm pointing out that EV 11 could still be improved from user’s interaction perspective.

Perhaps changing the placeholder icon to indicate the final resting place, and also rather than “timing out” go get the data and bring it back to its original location and send an email to the user when finished.

    Hardly a bank breaker exercise.

    Regards

  • Hard drive based backups may be a clever marketing ploy but it's typically a lot faster because 200MB in 9 'minutes is pretty slow, that's, what? 370k/s which is ok if it's WAN I suppose But best thing to do is to talk to your sales manager and have them put in an enhancement request, your best time to get any improvements made to the product is always when there's a purchasing decision on the table
  • EV is a great solution and i think JW hit the nail on the head with every aspect of his feedback for you. just to round things out, the file icon isnt an EV aspect, it's windows and how the OS displays an offline file.

there's no client on the end user's workstation to interact with EV, it's all done by the server. this also relates to the timeout and any prompts or notifications. however, you could configure a reg key to increase the timeout period but it probably wont help when you have to wait days for a tape to be retrieved from Iron Mtn or for an operator to notice an alert asking him to get out of his confy chair and go insert a tape.

  • "I guess I'm pointing out that EV 11 could still be improved from user’s interaction perspective."

Please make sure that the SE and account team you are working with are aware of your suggested improvements.

  • Thanks for the info.

Our users don't need data back in sec, especially if they have not accessed it for many years.

I'm not dismissing the HD, every product has its place, and I can see the benefits for instance;  not having to re-hydrate the data as an example

However, I have drawn up a diagram on how I understand the disk based archive and backup would work.

Can someone with experience please validate it for me, or make a correction/ suggestion

I'm going to cost it out and see if the cost model suits us.

    Thanks in advance
