EV Upgrade and move of Indexes

Hi,

We recently upgraded from 8.0.4 to 10.0.4 R1 CHF3 (via 9.0.5) and everything is working fine.

We now want to follow up with three tasks to improve the performance.

  • Upgrade the indexes to x64
  • Move our four EV servers into an Index Server Group.
  • Move all indexes to a single 500GB drive per EV server.

At the moment we have four EV servers taking care of Exchange/Public Folders and FSA with indexes spread across 2 SAN drives on each server.

We had a consultant which advised us on the process but it was a very high level view of it and we’d like to make sure we do this right the first time around.

With that in mind are the following steps in the right order and am I missing anything ?

  1. On the new drives create common index location “J:\vaultindex”
  2. Under the index service of each EV server add the new location.
  3. Close the original x32 locations.
  4. Create an index server group “ESBIndex”
  5. Add all EV servers to the new group.
  6. On the properties of each vault store, Indexers Tab, set the indexer to the new group.
  7. Start conversion of x32 indexes to x64 indexes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Can I ask why you want to create the Index Server Group?  You could use this TN to see if you would really benefit:

    Do I need to create Index Server groups?

    Since you have upgraded to EV 10 the 32 bit index locations are essentially closed as nothing new will be written to them. So other then creating the server groups your steps look good.

    Hi Tony,

     

    It was a recommendation of the consultant we had in and we hit three out of the five questions in that tech note.

    We originally had three EV servers but found our exchange/PF tasks taking a hit so added in a fourth server of the same spec and moved two exchange tasks onto it but left the indexing on the original server.

    We just want to clean it up a little by centralizing the indexes per server, spread the load and configure it so we don't have to worry so much about which server is carrying out the indexing, hence the group.

     

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not dead set on the index server group, if there's a good reason not to use it but if it will help our environment then we might as well do it now.

    One further question, if we carried out the steps above would any x64 indexes created in the current location be moved at the same time as the upgrade of x32 indexes to the new 500GB drives ?

    Or is this an extra step we'd need to carry out ?

    It sounds like you may be a good candidate for Server Groups, I just wanted to verify as some folks think they need them when actually they don't, hence that TN.  :)

    It will not automatically move any indexes but depending so you would need to move them I believe.  Ideally, your Index Server Groups would have been set up when you did the upgrade.

    Hi Tony,

    Just to give you bit of an update.

    I've created the Index Server Group and added all four servers into it.

    I've also started the upgrade process.

     

    I have noticed one thing though, some archives had three index locations, the original x32 location, the x64 in the same drive location and then the new drive location which is also x64.

    I've upgraded a few of these archives and they now have only one index location, the x64 location on the new drive. From looking at the report file it metions "64 bit index volumes will be included in the upgrade to allow merging of existing volumes.".

     

    I've checked a number of these and it does look like it's moving the old x32 and x64 bit indexes to the new index location.

    There are a few things around errors and missing files I'm checking with Support but it all looks good.
