EV11.0.1 Storage Expiry for EMC Celerra\VNX files

Hi

I know there's a special procedure required for Celerra's if I need to configure the deletion of archived files on placeholder deletion, but if I didn't need that and just wanted to turn on Storage Expiry does anything more need to be done?

Will EV expire files ok if I just turn storage expiry on and will it then remove the associated placeholder from the celerra ok?

thanks

  • sorry i thought you were trying to remediate an issue that you ran into with your storage device. if you look at the task properties of your FSA archiving task, you'll see that there's a shortcut deletion tab. this process runs once a week at a specific time and will cleanup placeholders for items deleted by storage expiry. just make sure that your schedules dont overlap.

  • Expiry is independent of the storage the placeholders are on or the mail system etc As long as the storage that comtains the vault store partitions will let you delete, you'll be ok So if you had a WORM device or a SnapLock or a Centera is compliance then you may have difficulties based on their own compliance capabilities But You could put your FSA targets offline and EV would still expire the items
  • Thanks - that makes sense.

But when files are expired I'd still need to make sure the placeholder is removed otherwise users may still try to open the item and get a failure message wouldn't they?

Is this completed for the VNX without the need for any specific procedures like the ones in the following technote https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.000046583

    many thanks

  • you're talking about two different things. delete on delete is a setting you need to configure whereas expiry happens on the backend. there's no connection back to placeholders or shortcuts during expiry. i suppose what you'll need to do is run a post process to look for orphaned placeholders and delete them (fsautility.exe -o)

  • Thanks for that Andrew

So, just to confirm, would the setting "Delete placeholders for the items that have been deleted from archives" normally automate this process only if using the FSA agent? but as I'm needing to do this on an EMC vnx where no agent is installed, I'll need to run the fsautility.exe with the -o option as a scheduled post process?

I'm just trying to confirm that it's not as straight forward as ticking the 'Delete placeholders for the items that have been deleted from archives' box and letting EV take care of it.

    thanks
