Help on Symantec Enterprise Vault Cross Forest Migration

Our client is currently Using Exchange 2003 and the archiving solution is from Symantec.
Enterprise Vault (GRM) -  Version 8.0 SP4
Enterprise Vault (VUM) -  Version 8.0 SP5

They plan to install Exchange 2010 in a new forest and then migrate the Mailbox from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 i.e Cross forest migration.
Customer will install the latest Enterprise Vault solution as a pre-requisite and it will be in place by the time Exchange migrations are started.

But they have not given information on how they would achieve that. We just want to understand how the archives are migrated is this co-existence scenariao as the old Mailboxes would be still using the EV on the old forest.

  • ck,

There are a couple ways this can be done.  If it were me, I would first look at installing EV in the destination forest and archive the Exchange servers in the other forest.  Then re-linking the mailboxes on the new Exchange 2010 server with their archives.  This would eliminate the need to move the archives.

Either way you go, I would strongly advise you partner with an EV Specialist to architect and implement EV for your customer.  This isn't something you want to get right to start with and not have to untangle a big mess partway through.

  • If they are going down that route it is more likely that they are using a third party migration tool such as Transvault to migrate the archives across and update the users shortcuts in their mailboxes.

What are GRM and VUM? are they references to the forest domain name etc.? They would need EV9 at least for exchange 2010 support.

EV itself does not have tool to migrate archives on a large scale (Move Archive is not suitable and it is not designed for these kind of migrations).

My questions would be, are they installing latest EV server on the new forest with new EV site i.e. a brand new install of EV environment from scratch? If this is case and from what you are saying it sounds like it is, they would need a third party migration tool.

  • A cross forest migration like this requires careful planning and excellent EV knowledge, however at a high level I can refer to the following.

1: An old document but still raises some important points and things you need to think about, some of which may still be relevant here.

2: Use the move archives wizard.Though this would require an upgrade of your 8 server to at least 9Sp1 to migrate to 10 I believe.

3: Or you could use the webappURL policy to have shortcuts accessing both EV sites. Mentioned in EV guide.
