Honest answer to Enterprise Vault/CA-DA licensing question

I cannot get a direct answer to my questions from our Symantec Licensing Specialist, so I am asking the question here.  We are on Enterprise Vault 11.

We no longer use Enterprise Virtual Vault/Vault Cache.  We only use Enterprise Vault so we can archive our journal mailbox(es) from our Exchange Server.  We only do that so we can take advantage of eDiscovery with Compliance Accelerator and Discovery Accelerator.

We have no users who need to access their own mailbox archives because they do not have personal archives anymore.  Anything we would need to find/restore for a user would be done from the journal copy and restored to the user's Exchange mailbox.

We have a few email-enabled Public Folders, but any email sent to them would already be processed through the journal mailbox, and therefore archived.  So we do not need Public Folder archiving.

It looks to me like the Enterprise Vault license that used to cover mailbox archiving for users was called "Storage Management".  Now it is called "Email Management Product Suite"

To boil it down:  If we do not archive user mailboxes, only the journal mailbox(es) for CA & DA, and we do not need Public Folder archiving - do we really need a license for the "Email Management Product Suite"?

Can someone please provide a direct answer to the above?  I would greatly appreciate it!  Thank you!!!

  • If you will just be doing journaling and no end-user archiving then you need to license the E-Discovery Advanced Edition.

This is a per user license, so if you are journaling 1000 users you need to buy a 1000 user license.

If you were to decide to archive user mailboxes, regardless as to rather or not you are using VC\VV or users are accessing them you would need to purchase the Storage Management Bundle for MSFT Exchange.
