How to restore or save multiple mails from vault

I am an EV user (running EV 2007 (7.5.5.2635 client), I think we are running EV v8.0.1560 on the server according to the help file path. Using XP Professional running MS Outlook 2007 SP2.

We have approx 3000 e-mails residing in a personal e-mail vault that we wish to be made visible by our department. Is there an easy / automatic way of moving multiple files whilst retaining the full folder path structure to any of the following:

  1. a shared team vault,
  2. restore e-mail to original unarchived format in Outlook (i.e. with all text and attachments now visible)
  3. move to windows folder as ".msg" files.
Perhaps there are some scripts to achieve one of more of these? Or is it something that IT can do for me from the central EV console / manager end?

    a little late to this post but here are the exact steps:


    This is the best method for a bulk restore of an archive to a PST file.  Using this method will perserve the file stucture and leave the items in the archive unless you select the option to delete as you work through the wizard.

    To start the export:
    1. In the left-hand pane of the Administration Console, right-click the Archives icon.

    2. On the shortcut menu, click Export.

    3. Work through the Export Archive wizard to complete the export

    You can export only items that have been archived from mailboxes, not items archived from public folders or SharePoint workspaces.

    When you export, you can filter the output by date and by retention category. So, for example, you could export items less than a year old that were archived with a retention category of Business.

    As you work through the wizard you will have an option to specify a root folder to export items from, specify your target folder here.

    When you export to PST files, the wizard lets you control the maximum size of the output files. The default maximum of 600 MB is ideal for writing to CD. If a file reaches the maximum size, the wizard automatically creates a numbered sequence of files, none of which exceeds the maximum size.

    - IT can export the whole archive, or only subfolders to a PST file (retaining folder structure), and then they can import it either into Exchange or into a shared archive.
    - You can search for items using the EV Search, then create a "basket" with all items you want to restore, you can then restore them to the original location in your mailbox, and copy them from there.

    I believe the first option is the way you want to go...

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    What tool / method would IT use for the export / import route?

    Is the basket method one that the user can do? If so, how do I create a basket? I cannot see the button / option available to me.

    IT would use the standard Vault Administration Console to export as well as Import.
    This is integrated into Enterprise Vault.

    The Basket method is available from the Browser Search.
    If you click the "Search" Button in Outlook, you should have the "Brower Search" option in the upper right corner, I believe.

    We are going down the IT route, but they cannot see the file structure from the Vault Administration Console. Is there any option to view structure, and any method to use / avoid to ensure that they will preserve the file structure when creating a pst file?

    Also, when creating the pst, we want to ensure that the archived mail remains in the vault. Is this possible? Any options to select to ensure this occurs?

    Hello Arne,

    The archived mails will remain in the original archive when making a pst.

    You indeed cannot see the structure in the Admin Console. If you need an export of the whole archive, just have them export to a pst
    On the Archives container, rightclick, Export archive to pst, select archive, export.

    Another option might be to give the accounts that need access to the archive rights to it. You can then use your archive explorer to browse the archive, and if necessary open mails, forward etc.
