Importing several large PST files into user mailboxes

Hello Everyone,

Is there anything that I should do in the EV server before or after importing the PST into the current existing user mailboxes ?

because i'll do it after the office hour where the Vault archving job might be running in the background for the whole mailbox server.

Thanks.

  • Nope not realy, if you have malibox quotas make sure they off durning the import. Other than that nothing I can think of.

  • I agree with Wayne, I don't think there is anything special you need to do.  If you're creating shortcuts for the imported items, then like Wayne says you need to consider the mailbox quota's on the mailbox.

  • Ah no actually in my current Exchange Mailbox I got no quota at all, from the EV point of view should I rebuild my index or do something else ?

  • Thanks,

Can I safely assume that the mail will be re-archived intelligently by the EV once the import procedure has finished ? (eg. no duplicates in the vault and reindexed automatically).

  • 1st, don't import the PST into Exchange at all... EV will import the PST into the archive directly, not through Exchagne. If you are using the PST Locator/Collector/Migrator then you would set the schedule for the Migrator task to run at a different time than the Archive task to preclude any resource contention. If you are using the PST migration wizard then there is nothing else that needs to be done. EV will import the items into the archive, index them etc... without any other action by you.
  • ... you will have an impact on Exchange if you decide to create shortcuts to those imported items.   But I agree with maxwits 98% :)

  • Thanks for the reply max,

I got several PST here in my shared network drive, so based on your suggestion i shall then import it from the EV console (from the server) using PST locator ?

  • I would just use the Import wizard in the VAC, if it's a few PSTs in a known location.

  • Rob, thanks for the reply,

So after the import, it will stream he mailbox content to the exchange server ?

  • If you opt to create shortcuts during the import, yes the shortcuts will be copied to Exchange.  If you didn't opt to create shortcuts during the import, then nothing will hit Exchange.
