Mailbox Sizes not matching up

Hi,

The main reason we implemented KVS was to manage our mailbox limits to 200MB, we are having a issue at the moment where the Outlook mailbox size is not matching that of Exchange system manager

Any Ideas?????

  • James,
Can we get some more details about your situation? What's the version of EV, what's the version of exchange, and what's the size reporting difference?

  • Hi Micah,

I'm using EV 6 SP1 with Exchange 2003 SP1, the issue i am having is that the mailbox size that is reported in Outlook ie 200MB is not matching Exchange system Manager ie 150MB in system manager. As we are running with mailbox limits in place users are getting mailbox size warning messages.

    Any ideas???
  • That's a strange, it sounds more like an Exchange issue though. Outlook doesn't care about the mailbox size. Your mailbox limit are strictly handled by your Exchange server.

Is this a new install of EV? Have you archived anything?
  • We've been running EV for about 4 months now. I think it is a EV issue as we have multiple exchange servers with mailboxes that are currently not on EV and outlook and system manger size match up
  • Hmmm,
What's your default mailbox archiving policy look like? Are you using shortcuts, archiving attachments, etc?

  • Personally I never expect Outlook (MAPI) and Exchange (JET) database sizes to match up. If you really want oddness check the email sizes MAPI will return from PSTs. They are just way out. the upshot of this is that if EV says you've migrated 100Mb of data from a PST file in to a Vault you have probably actually only migrated about 75Mb. (This is ignoring SI or compression). I'm never very sure if Outlook really understands the dumpster either.

    Why is this a worry?
  • If you are really concerned...
Move the mailbox into a different Exchange store. If there is corruption in the mailbox, this will often take care of it. I have seen mailboxes report sizes over 1GB in ESM but only 175MB in the Outlook client. If that works, just move them back to where they came from.
