MDC files in users AppData folder even though we have VV and VC disabled?

I'm looking for a little clarification about MDC files in the users AppData folder.  We are on EV 10 currently, and have Windows 7 clients with a mix of Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010.  For all of these clients, we have the Virtual Vault enabled, and Vault Cache enabled.

However, in our Citrix environment, we specifically wanted to disable the Virtual Vault and Vault Cache, to avoid user profile sizes ballooning to several gigabytes depending on vault cache size.  To do this, we've added a GPO to our Citrix Server OU to set both the registry keys "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\OVEnabled" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\VVEnabled" to 0.

On the surface, this appears to work properly.  The Virtual Vault and Vault Cache are not enabled, but users can still browse with Archive Explorer and search with Vault Search.  However, we still see some users that occasionally end up with MDC files several hundred megabytes in size in their profile under C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\KVS\Enterprise Vault\<Vault ID>.

My question is two fold: Are we following the best method for disabling the Virtual Vault and Vault Cache specifically ONLY on our Citrix servers, while allowing it elsewhere, and if so, why do the MDC files keep getting created?  Secondly, are these MDC files safe to delete from the users profile folder for cleanup purposes, assuming the user has no interface access to the Virtual Vault and hasn't dragged and dropped anything into it in the Citrix environment?

Thanks all!

  • For the users which have an MDC file, are those registry keys set?

safe to delete... yes... but if you don't get to the bottom of why they are being created for some users, then they will be created again and again.
