Metering Enabled for EV

Anyone knows what it is meant by Metering Enabled for EV? I have been asked by the Auditing people for info:

1. AD Accounts enabled?

2. Users archives info in (GB)?

3. Metering enabled for EV?

I can get info for 1 and 2 but I don't know what they mean by Metering Enabled for EV? Anyone come across this term?

Thanks.

  • Hmmm the first thing that comes to my mind is the Billing Accounts, so you can bill different departments for the amount of space they used.

So for instance you may have several different departments, Marketing, Sales, IT etc.
You then in EV set the billing account to be maybe the head of each department, so lets say you have Marketing department that has UserA, UserB and UserC and they bill to Mr Marketing Manager.

You then go to http://yourEVServer/EnterpriseVault/Usage.asp and you have a link there for Usage By Billing Account

You will then see several Billing Accounts such as

    Mr Marketing Manager
    Mr IT Manager
    Ms Sales Manager

And next to each it will show how much space is being used, so you could say that Marketing is taking up 2TB more data than anyone else, so you charge them internally for the space that they are using

By default the Billing Account is set to the user that owns the mailbox, so when you view a default EV installation you usually have one billing account per user, but in a proper set up you may only see a handful of accounts etc

  • ah crap, sorry CTEV, didn't see it was you, you know what billing accounts are, sorry :)

  • i wonder if they mean quotas on the archives. probably best to go back to them and ask for clarification.

  • I did a little digging into what the metering is and it seems that it has nothing to do with Enterprise Vault but to do with Symantec Altiris and Symantec Management Platform (Notification server):

I think the Auditor is barking up the wrong tree!!! well, I hope. I asked him what he meant and he didn't know either!!!! :-)

  • he probably saw the word Symantec and got all excited about asking you for things

  • LOL...yeah...probably wanting to charge us for whatever he can think of!!! :-)
