move journal mailbox

hello. thanks for the time and effort.

I am looking to move my journal mailbox from one Exchange server to another.  Currently the journal mailbox is 10gb size. I saw this article and it seemed fairly simple.

 http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH48824

1. add the new Exchange server

2. create the journal mailbox on the new Exchange server

3. stop the journal task service

4. wait the journal queues are clear

5. point to the journal task to the new journal mailbox

6. point Exchange mailbox servers to the new journal mailbox

6. start journaling services

What would happen if I just move (mailbox move) the current journal mailbox to the new Exchange server?  I would still have to add the server to EV Exchange servers.  And wouldn't it consume a lot of time moving it?  Also what happens to the messages that are trying to reach the journal mailbox? do they get stuck in a queue?

Thanks for the time.

  • I would do the following 1. Add the new exchange server to the Vault Admin Console 2. Create a new System Mailbox on the new exchange server 3. Make sure the permissions are correct for the new server 4. Stop the current journaling task 5. Move the journal mailbox to the new exchange server 6. Create a new task pointing at the new exchange server and set it to use the system mailbox you set up in step 2 7. Add the journal target in the exchange servers section in the VAC and assign it to the task you created 8. Remove the old journal target on the old server 9. Delete the old journal task 10. Start the new journal task That should be it, really wouldn't worry about too much of the queues

  • thanks for the quick reply... just to clarify on step 5... the new journal mailbox is already on the new Exchange server.  so I have created the journaling task and pointed to the new Exchange server.

Also does the old journal mailbox need to be extracted to pst to import?
