Need Public Folder advice

Hi Guys,

I have a customer who has about 800 GB of public folder data on Exchange 2007. They are using EV just for mailbox archiving today.

Now, they want to move to Exchange 2013.

Question is... if it is better to archive PF on Exchange 2007 today or wait until after they have migrated to Exchange 2013?

Ref the limitations mentioned in this article: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO83264

Thanks.

Gill

  • What version of EV are you currently using?

Honestly, if it were me, I think I would lean to waiting on archiving them to keep it simple.

  • Tony,

    They are on EV 10.0.4.

I have had my fair share of unwanted/uncalled-for complexities during my career... :)

I was hoping for the same suggestion, to wait.

    Thanks!

  • I'd agree with Tony. Public folder migration from 2007 to 2013 can be a beast in of itself without dealing with issues that can come up during/post archival.

  • Migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 can be a great moment to re-evaluate the public folder usage.

Microsoft is 'anouncing' almost every Exchange release that the next version does not contain public folders anymore. I would suggest to look into the option to move the public folder data to shared mailboxes.

  • Irnmamont & ZeRoCOOL,

Appreciate your suggestions. I think it is pretty clear now that the best thing is to wait. Better to keep the customer happy and satisfied, than to create potential problems.

    Thanks everyone..
