One Exchange Server, two EV servers after an Exchange consolidation
Got a question in regard to consolidating servers, that I've kept spinning around in my head all day and would like some input to it :)
A customer is looking at going from several Exchange servers to fewer Exchange servers.
From an EV perspective that is not optimal due to the 1:1 relationship but can be done.
But I started thinking in regard to if it's necessary to consolidate the VS/VSptn or if the VS/VS ptn's can be kept on the same EV servers but additional archiving will only be performed by one of them (in a 2 EV server to 1 Exchange server scenario).
As far as I know the EV server that will perform the connetion/copy etc. against the Exchange server will just "populate" the storage archive queue on the other EV server if the user archive resides on that server rather than the same EV server running the task.
So in essence since the EV server that won't be archiving anymore will only act as a host for the VS/Index storage, for the users that belong to that server ?
Yes there will be performance impact but will it work with all the features even though the server hosting the VS/Index don't have a task against the/an Exchange Server?
I'm thinking of e.g. OWA since that requires a restore to the user mailbox etc.
I belive it will but let me know if you can think of a reason why it wouldn't work.
Cheers
Fredrik
I can't think of a reason why it wouldnt work. You are already aware of the main thing which is related to performance due to the cross server archiving.
