Quick SQL License Confirmation

Hi All

I have a customer that uses EV.Cloud but still uses EV on-premise for historical data access only and historical eDiscovery

They dont archive anymore and the customer wants to know how many SQL licenses they need for this type of " read-only " EV site?

I logged a call with support and support said they dont need any licenses and I wanted confirmation if this is correct?

The SQL server only has EV databases on it

Thanks

  • Great question. The easy answer may be in the minimum specs. The eDisco use may require more depending on the use.  This really becomes a question that only support and Dev can answer because it comes ot a question of supportability if something is borked. Supportability starts with minimum specs or you risk friction in support.

  • Hello,

SQL is support and managed by Microsoft, not Veritas.. Veritas support in itself is correct in stating you don't need licenses (for archiving).

As for your SQL license, you will need to check with MS.

  • Aslong as it is no SQL Express you need to pay for it either per

Server license + CAL (Client Acess License)

    OR

    per Core

If I were you I would check if a Microsoft SA is in place or any excess licences can be used.

  • hey bruce! as a consultant, this sound like a great opportunity for a migration. keeping EV on prem and all the associated infrastructure and software certainly has multiple ongoing license and maintenance cost for all the components. your ROI case would also include the associated infrastructure, OS, SQL, storage, backups, patching, security, risk, agents, and so on.

unfortunately, i believe veritas support gave you incorrect information.
