Restored items when browsing folders

Hi all,

I've EV that is archiving some shares and all is working fine (items are archived and shortcuts are created).

When a user (windows 7) open the share the shortcuts "disappear" because the items are retrieved also if the user does anything.

Anyone with the same issue? I've disabled the detail pane and the preview pane but the behaviour is the same

  • It sounds like you are referring to File System Archiving.  Can you please share what version of EV and your file system?

  • EV 11.0.1, FS is a veritas cluster server 6.1 with NTFS file system

  • have a read of this:  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH174166

While the technote refers to NetApp it also says this:

The same issue can be observed for placeholders on Windows file server also.

    Issue

It has been observed on Windows 7 machines with placeholders held on a NetApp device, when a user performs either of the two functions below, the file is recalled.

    • Single left clicks on a placeholder
    • Right clicks on a placeholder and choose properties

    Environment

Placeholders held on a NetApp device, running either OnTap 7.0 and 8.0

The same issue can be observed for placeholders on Windows file server also.

It has been observed that accessing the same files from an XP machine does not produce the same behavoir.

It has been observed that accessing placeholders held on a Windows target from a Windows 7 client does not produce the same behavior.

    Cause

Either the Windows Explorer "preview pane" will attempt to preview the file and/or the Windows Explorer "Details Pane" will attempt to get more details about the selected file. Either way the placeholder is then recalled from Enterprise Vault.

It has also been observed that if "pass through recall" is enabled, the placeholder is still recalled, through the pass through location and so the placeholder never changes, but this is still increased/unnecessary I/O if a user is simply single clicking on a file and actually opening the file.

    Solution

Disable the Windows Explorer "Details Pane" and "Preview Pane"

Windows File Explorer ---- Organize ----- Layout ------ Details Pane

Windows File Explorer ---- Organize ----- Layout ------ Preview Pane

Either of these enabled will cause a placeholder to be recalled unnecessarily.
