RMS protected message. Which one is indexed: encrypted\decrypted copy?

Hello everybody.

Our organistation uses RMS environment. So, users send to each other RMS-protected content or RMS-protected emails. Exchange was configured with Journal Report Decryption Agent, and as a result journal envelope in journal mailbox contains 2 copies - encrypted copy (original) and decrypted copy (clear copy, which were decrypted with journal report decryption agent).

Enterprise Vault has a configuration setting which controls which attachmet from envelope EV has to archive - protected (original) OR unprotected (decrypted version).  As I know EV archives both copies, but only decrypted copy available for indexing (obviously!) and restore from archive. No way to restore protected copy with  standard tools. Correct me if I wrong here.

Does EV index attributes from both emails in journal envelope: encrypted and decrypted? Or only from decrypted?

Thanks.

  • In simple words, only copy you target as primary (Decrypted or encrypted) will be indexed

EDIT : Quick test would be to run a test search .

  • Hi,

Considering, decrypted copy (Clear Text copy) is primary target of EV while archiving journaled message. You are correct in saying that currently EV does not offer any user interface option to access alternate message (in this scenario, its RMS Protected copy).

Does EV index attributes from both emails in journal envelope: encrypted and decrypted? Or only from decrypted?

    - The content and properties of the Clear Text message can be indexed but the current Exchange limitation on decoding any attached RMS Protected messages means these cannot be indexed.

However, if you are interested to get RMS protected attributes indexed, you can choose RMS protected copy as primary archiving target. But in this case, restricted indexing information is available, the body and attachments are not indexed although the Subject, Recipients and other external properties are available.

    I hope this helps..
