SAV Scan interupting E Vault Backup

We are using Symantec E-Vault, and when we are attempting to back it up, it seems to coincide with a scheduled SAV scan. When the SAV scan runs, the backup stops.

Does anyone have any idea why this may be occurring?

  • 1. What error do you get in the backup job, what backup software do you use ?

    2. Why are you running backups at the same time as a virus scan ?

Not that you shouldn't be able to but I'm pretty sure both will take a lot longer if you do it at the same time.

Another thing is, are you scanning the index locations, vault store partitions, msmq location etc. ?

If so then the best practice is to exclude those locations for virus scans.

  • I am not running a backup at the same time, there are NO scheduled scans, the scans are realtime only. There should be NO scan running...

All exclusions are in place.  I have to double check on the error.

  • I changed it from 8:00PM to 3:30AM, which will probably make no difference because it takes approximately 2 weeks for the back up to complete.

  • Question maybe better suited to either the backup or the av communities (more likely for the backup guys)
  • If the backups take two weeks to complete then either something is wrong or you need to look at something else to backup the resources, e.g. use snapshot backups instead.

I would start with JW2's suggestion and look into why the backups take two weeks to complete.

  • Hi Bryan,

backing up EV Stores can really be painful. You have a Millions of small files... Also in a case of desaster, the restore can take hours/days/weeks depending on the size and number of files...

Did you ever think about replication instead of backing up? Then there is no need for backing up with traditional methods, because archived data is allways static.

Also as a main advantage your Recovery Point Objective is "0" and the Recovery Time Objective is just some minutes.

We have a product called "EVnearSync" which works almost similar as a Centera Replication. You might want to have a look on it: "http://evtools.net/products/ev-nearsync"
