Storage Exec Replacement

Hi guys, I have been suing Veritas Storage Exec for the past number of years and it has worked well. However, it's legacy and there is no more support. What is the replacement product for this one? Is it Enterpsie Vault? All I'm interested is Fpolicy/User Quota's.

  • Hi shocko,

Symantec Storage Exec reached EOL on June 5th, 2013. Enterprise Vault File System Archiving could be considered as an alternative for this product. Please, take a look at the PDF document in this technote:

End of Life/End of Support Life Announcement for Veritas Storage Exec (tm) 5.3 and Symantec Storage Exec (tm) 5.5

    Alternative Products

In the short to medium term there is not necessarily any action to take on your part as Symantec will continue to fully support Storage Exec. In the longer term you may wish to consider these alternative Symantec products for your Storage Resource Management needs:

    Enterprise Vault File System Archiving

Enterprise Vault File System Archiving enables out-of-the-box space management and archiving support for any application that generates and stores information in standard file formats. Enterprise Vault File System Archiving saves critical space on file servers by blocking unwanted content and seamlessly moving files to alternate storage devices without affecting the end user. Using policy-based settings, Enterprise Vault enables you to archive or even block or delete files by file type, age, or other criteria. Items are de-duplicated, compressed, stored, and indexed centrally by Enterprise Vault software, and can be searched as well as retrieved transparently by users via optional placeholders. Through the unique versioning capability of Enterprise Vault, a record of change over time can be maintained, which may be crucial in compliance and discovery scenarios. Built in reports highlight both active files on primary storage and files stored within the archive helping you plan your storage and archival policies as well as detailing your return on investment.

For further information regarding Enterprise Vault File System Archiving, please see:

Please, contact your Symantec Representative to get more information and details regarding Enterprise Vault for File System Archiving since this technote was written in 2008.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply GabeV! Much appreciated.

I've bene looking at our EV 2010 deployment and indeed it does seem to have fpolicy. However, it seems that it does not have the other features that StorageExec has for NetApp filers namely:

    • User Quota Management
    • User Quota Reprorting
    • Reporting

Do Symantec have any other poducts that cover these aspects?
