Supported vs Working - browser access

I was wondering if Symantec could comment on this strange thing I just found while leafing through the compatibility guide. It's nothing new, but I'd like to see some comments on it :)

I quote:

"The Enterprise Vault OWA Extensions are not supported for OWA client access from Safari or Firefox."

And underneath that, under EV 9.0 and in the Safari / row, a bit fat "Y" for Supported. Firefox is Pending support I note.

So, in my book, only Internet Explorer is supported, since that's the only browser in which the OWA extensions load at all, and manual archive, archive explorer etc is enabled.

But - what is Symantec's definition of supported in this case? Every web browser bar IE works /exactly/ the same - you click on the link in the message to open an attachment. If you're not using a customized shortcut body you can't even do that though!

Cheers

Richard

  • In my opinion, I agree with you...  I will talk to the Certification Team, and the team that puts the information in the Guide, and see what we can do.

  • Supported means that it has been tested and gone through QA and each aspect of EV's functionality works as expected, you will often find things work but are not supported.

One instance of this is the Enterprise Vault Outlook Add In on Citrix, its not supported, hasn't been tested but in fact works quite well for the most part as expected. however it has not been QA'd or certified so therefor not supported

  • I would agree it's not amazingly clear, and could be better... however the section you're referring to where it says "Safari" yes, I think, refers to search.. not OWA.

I will file an internal bug report to get this updated, sometime in the New Year.

  • Thanks Rob.

For me, "Supported" - when taken in the same context as other web browsers (IE!) - should mean all functionality is available. If for whatever reason you cannot do manual archiving or Archive Explorer within browser XYZ, it's all but useless to me.

Much like Thunderbird on Linux, which isn't supported, despite the fact it behaves just like Outlook without the EVClient installed.

I hope you see what I mean!

Anyway, moving on to my next topic :)

  • Many thanks Rob!

Marry Christmas, Happy New Year etc :)

  • I've revisited this today after a discussion with the head of the certification team.

In the Enterprise Vault Core Dependencies chapter of the Guide it says :

Pending for EV 9 for Firefox and Safari 3 and Safari 4.  "No" for all other versions of Enterprise Vault.

In the Mac Client Browsers section it says :

Safari 3.2.1 or later, and Safari 4 : Yes, for supported.

However, right above that is a caveat saying that EV OWA Extensions are not supported for OWA client access from either Safari or Firefox.

So in effect, after review, I think it is clear that you can't use a browser other than IE 7+ to get full functionality.  It's also not as simple as clicking on a link -- yes that will work, but our EV OWA implementation, for example, is a lot more complicated than that.
