Upgrading EV6 to EV9

In preperation for upgrading Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 SP1, I've been tasked to upgrade an existing Veritas Enterprise Vault 6 enviornment that is configured as follows:

EVault 6 SP3 and SQL 2005 RTM on the same server archiving only Exchange 2003 MBs. Policy is set to retain emails for 6 years with a current Apparently, there Evault 6 instance is not licensed for pst imports. of the 100 mailboxes being archived, only 40 will need to continue to archive after upgrading to 2010.

Based on what I've researched so far, there is no supported upgrade path from EVault 6 to 9. At a high level, I must first upgrade 6 to 7, then 7 to 8, then 8 to 9? It's obvious the environment is way behind on revisions, (thus the need to upgrade or more like a network refresh).

I know this is a loaded question, but anyone have suggestions on the correct/alternative approach to this endeavor? They are only archiving emails at this time.

Any input on resource links, KBs, etc is much appreciated. Thanks in Advance

  • Its actually worse than you think,
    Enterprise Vault 6 -> 7 -> 2007 (7.5) -> 8 -> 9

And if you have Discovery Accelerator in the mix, then this makes it more complex, because they have to have specific versions installed before moving to the next

Pretty much the way it would have to be is

    1. Backup your databases and mark them as EV6 backups
    2. Stop the services on all EV Servers
    3. Upgrade to the latest version of EV 7
    4. Restart the server if necessary
    5. Start the directory service and wait for it to complete the upgrade
    6. Run the Configuration Wizard and wait for it to complete
    7. Start the Storage Service and wait for it to complete the upgrade

    8. Backup your databases and mark them as EV7 backups
    9. Stop the services on all EV Servers
    10. Upgrade to the latest version of EV2007
    11. Restart the server if necessary
    12. Start the directory service and await for the event to say upgrade complete
    13. Run the Configuration wizard and wait for it to complete
    14. Start the storage service and wait for it to complete the upgrade

    15. Backup your databases and mark them as EV2007 backups

At this point i would suggest creating the provisioning groups for your users, ensure that provisioning completes, that users sync and there are no errors....,if these checks pass then

    16. stop the services on all EV Servers
    17. Upgrade to the latest version of EV8
    18. Restart the server if necessary
    19. Start the directory service and await the event to say upgrade complete

STOP! you need to think about the sharing database and its schema, once you set a vault store in a Vault Store Group, as soon as you enable it for sharing in that group you CANNOT move it to another group, so be careful.

    20. Run the configuration wizard and wait for it to complete
    21. Start the Storage Service and wait for it to complete the upgrade

Open the Vault Admin Console really quickly and ensure that you can see the Default Upgrade Group under "Vault Stores" if you don't see that, don't carry on, call support, if you do , set up your sharing options under the properties of the group to create your database etc

    22. Backup your databases and mark them as EV8 backups, make sure you backup your new Fingerprint database this time
    23. Upgrade to the latest version of EV9
    24. Restart the server if necessary
    25. Start the directory service and await for it to say the upgrade has complete
    26. Start the storage service and wait for it to say upgrade has complete

From EV8 to EV9 no configuration wizard needs to be run.
You then need to installthe EV9 OWA extensions on the CAS Servers for Exch2010 and FES/BES servers for Exchange 2003

You need to run a Throttling script on Exchange 2010 to remove any throttling that would stop EV from connecting properly to the Exchange 2010 servers.

You will need to install Outlook 2007 and the performance hotfix on the servers

This is a relaly really high level overview, you will need to run the Deployment scanners to make sure that EV has the proper pre-requisites etc, all i can say is test test test test and test and have supports number on hand in case anything goes wrong...
