Active Directory Granular backup and restore option

Hello again

Netbackup 7.0 Enterprise

Windows 2003 R2 (Master and Media servers)

Windows Client DCs, Windows 2003R2 SP2

I'm looking into how to setup granular backups and recovery for our AD.

The actual configuration seems straightforward so no problem there.

I just have one small query regarding the requirements outlined in the admin guide Admin Guide.

On page 489 of the Admin guide it says

"Granular-level restores can be performed only if the backup was written to a disk storage unit."

So because we currently backup to a VTL which will be treated as tape as far as Netbackup is concerned will we have problems?

The section where it explains how to configure AD granular backups and restores (including system requirements and how to create the relevant policy) doesn’t mention this restriction at all.

Cheers

  • Seems the whole explanation of why Disk Storage (Basic or Advanced) is required, is better covered in the Exchange and Sharepoint manuals.

This section on page 789 of Admin Guide 1 'sort-of' explains it:

NetBackup Granular Recovery leverages Network File System, or NFS, to read
individual objects from a database backup image. Specifically, the NetBackup
client uses NFS to extract data from the backup image on the NetBackup media
server. The NetBackup client uses “Client for NFS” to mount and access a mapped
    drive
that is connected to the NetBackup media server. The NetBackup media
server handles the I/O requests from the client through NBFSD.

This 'mapped drive' is the Disk storage unit.

Backups can be written to tape, but will have to be duplicated to disk for granular restores.

Remember that VTL is presented to the OS and NBU as tape. It cannot be NFS mounted like a normal filesystem.

  • Thanks a lot Marianne

    So that I understand this,

I could do a granular backup to tape, (in our case, VTL emulating tape) but to restore any data I’d need to duplicate the image containing the data to a disk storage unit connected to the same media server first?

  • Correct. You will also have to promote the disk copy to primary copy.

  • Many thanks for your helpful responses Marianne.
