Aix SAN Media Server Still Low throughput rate on regular backups

Hi All,

Have recently implemented Netbackup 7.0 SAN Media Server on AIX 5.3 for achiving max throughput over FC. But it was shocking after routing regular backup jobs to FC there was no satisfactory improvements. i mean without SAN media server approx 250gb of data used to take 9+hrs  with speed variance of 1-9 mb/s . after SAN media server to FC which has 4 gbps of transport throughput rate just increased to 19-25 mb/s.

I also noticed that regular backups are archive (.gz) files of Offline Oracle DB's from other servers which gets compressed to .gz format byb means of timely scripts. Not sure if same archives contains smaller chunks (not pretty sure if that also impacts throughput rate badly).

As per my understanding compressed file will take time for backup but this should apply to any of backup product available in market. However in this case it's different . TSM is able to take the same backup within 2-3 hrs with throughput rate of 70-90 mb/s ...

Any clues what could be wrong. Or if any tweaks can be done post SAN media server if this configuration relies on environment.

Cheers

Vaibhav

  • There was multiple copies enabled in which STU was still referenced to previous STU. After updating the newer STU backups went smoothly.. from 19-25mb/s jumped to 90-115mb/s.
