backup failed giving error 48

Hi,

i have a backup failed giving error 48 in activity monitor // (48)client hostname could not be found

& the 2 clients used in backup are ods_prod1 , and ods_prod2 os are linux redhat
& in the host properties of ods_prod1 and  ods_prod2 i found that yellow mark and in the status :client hostname could not be found

master server:m4

Symantic Product Name: Symantec Netbackup
Product Version: 7.0.1
Operating System: HP-UX 11iv3

  • Quite possibly, unless there's an alias somewhere that points odsprod1 -> ods_prod1 etc

Change one or the other to the correct hostname i.e. correct the hostnames in the policy or in /etc/hosts (whichever's incorrect.)

  • Did you follow any of the recommendations in the Troubleshhoter?

    # bperror -S 48 -r
client hostname could not be found
The system function gethostbyname() failed to find the client's host name.

Verify that the client name is correct in the following:
    *
    * The NetBackup policy configuration on the master server.
    * The General tab in the following dialog boxes: NetBackup Client Properties and Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type (on Micr
osoft Windows and NetWare nontarget clients). To display these dialog boxes, start the Backup, Archive, and Restore interface on the
client. For the General tab, click NetBackup Client Properties on the File menu; click Specify NetBackup Machines and Policy Type o
    n the File menu.
    * The bp.conf file on UNIX, Linux, and Macintosh clients.
    * The bp.ini file on NetWare target clients.
    * On clients and servers, verify that the name service is set up to resolve the NetBackup client names correctly.
On UNIX and Linux clients, verify that the client's host name is in the /etc/hosts file or the YP hosts file or NIS maps.

  • i found that the client names in   /etc/hosts are :

    odsprod1

    and

    odsprod2

where in the policy are :

    ods_prod1

    and

    ods_prod2

    is this an issue

  • Quite possibly, unless there's an alias somewhere that points odsprod1 -> ods_prod1 etc

Change one or the other to the correct hostname i.e. correct the hostnames in the policy or in /etc/hosts (whichever's incorrect.)

  • ok i changed it , and initiated the backup and it is done successfully

  • Glad to help!

Would be even more grateful if you marked my post as the solution instead of your own tho'! wink

This would enable other with the same issue to go straight to the solution by clicking on the "green tick" in the forum list or the "see solution" link on the opening post. Plus it'll give me that nice warm glow (& a few extra points!)

Whilst I've got your attention, did you get the information you needed on the following two discussions?
Can they now be deemed to be "solved"?

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/add-new-client-netbackup-701
    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/command-line-alternate-guis-activity-monitor

    - in all cases it does help greatly all concerned if you mark any post that best helped as the solution in any discussion that you start.

  • I have moved the solution to Andy's post.

Please always award person who pointed you in the right direction with Solution.
