Backup Oracle Dedup

Hello all Forum

I have a Netbackup Appliance 5220 where there are backups of VMware Snapshots and Oracle DB.

The jobs VMware backup Full and Incremental the dedup being done, seems to have a great result, an excellent rate for a sign.

Already in my backups Oracle Database, the rate of Dedup is only 1%.
I wonder what can I do to increase that rate and I can have more space in my Appliance. Backups are many daily and my whole 30TB fills easily.

Can anyone tell me where I can start to check and improve it?

Thank you all.

  • Oracle compression and / or encryption are usually the killers for de-dupe.

Ask your oracle DBA is either is being used and if there is an option not to use them if they are being used.

If not then you may want to write them to an advanced disk pool on the appliance (maybe add another shelf for that)

  • You need to ensure the RMAN option "filesperset" is set to one.

Please refer to Appendic C "deduplication best pratice" in the NBU 7.6 Oracle Admin guide

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6481

    A MSDP pool can max be 64TB - a 5220 can house 72TB.
