"backup partially successful" with status code 1

Regularly, some of our backups complete with status code 1.  The email message I receive says "Backup on client ... for user root by server ... was partially successful"

Right after this "incomplete" job, another job runs for the same client & policy.  This time it succeeds.

I don't believe there's anything wrong, I'm just trying to understand what's going on.

Please forgive the newbee question.  And if you want to point me to an area in the DocSet, that's fine.

Thanks....Lyle

  • Does the job actually restart or is it a child job that succeeds with a parent job being incomplete? I have seen that at times when BMR is selected in a policy without BMr being fully configured the parent BMr job partially succeeds and the child job which does the actual file system backup succeeds just fine.
  • Probably an open file issue.

Also always include your version of NBU, which you are running.

  • What type of backup for which Client type? MS-Windows or Standard backup? Database backup perhaps? OS on Client? NBU version?

Please post all info in Details tab of the backup job. Also check 'Problems Report' for this client.

  • Yes, of course, I forgot to give more info.  Sorry.

NetBackup 7.0 Server running on Solaris 10

Clients include: Solaris 10, Centos 5.x, and Windows 2008.  I'm not sure how to query the NetBackup client versions on each.

Open files could be the problem.  Would this give the symptom I get, where the backup is listed as "incomplete", but seems to start up again and succeed?

    Thanks...Lyle

  • By golly, that's it!

A backup job starts, sends me an email saying it's "incomplete", then a child backup job starts and runs to completion.

It doesn't make a lot of sense, though.  And sure can throw off a SysAdmin off when seeing it for the first time.
