Best Way to Export Images from remote site.

Good afternoon.

I have a very remote site with it's own Media server which stores backup copies locally to a local MSDP pool. (Windows) The bandwidth out of that site is less then 1 Mbps.

I have been duplicating the backups from that office out to a DR site hosting another media server with attached MSDP storage. The original images at the DR site came from backup tapes we couriered to the  DR location and imported into that DR site MSDP pool..

Deduplication ran great even with that 1 Mbps connection.

Management decided to retire the Tape libraries (old tech you know) and I was left with no means to transfer large amounts of backup data to the DR site if ever needed. (or visa versa)

I'm looking at using portable  USB SSD drives to export backup images out of that office (New server deployments etc)  to the DR location. I'm just not sure how to use those drives ?

Do I run backups in the remote office to Advanced Disk Storage and then copy to the portable disks or do I use the portable drives directly as Advanced Disk storage.

Many Thanks in Advance

Mike

  • Hello

Copying backup images from ADV to portable disk could have worked. I doubt you could use these later on as ADV in remote domain. I would copy backup images from these portable disks to ADV at remote domain and did an image import phase I and II on this pool. Should work.

If these two media servers reports to the same primary - I can already smell issues with importing as primary will state - skipping already existing image or something similar.

I'm starting to think I'm over thinking this.  Thanks for your reply BTW..

All my media servers including this remote location are on the same netbackup domain.

Tell me if this could work.

Create a local Adv pool on the media server in the remote location. Run a backup of the needed servers to this adv pool.

Once completed, copy that data to the portable drives and ship to new location.

Run the import from disk parts 1 and 2 to get the data into the catalogue and images to the MSDP pool. If there is a conflict with the data already being present I can expire the original images on the source advanced disk from the remote location.

It was so much easier to do this with tapes.

Would backing up to basic disk and copy to portable media be a better solution then advanced disk ?

      Thanks for your guidance.

        Hi Maj_Hazard1

If you are going to copy from the backup pool to your portable drives then it probably makes little difference whether you use Advanced disk or Basic disk.

You will need to expire the backup as it is not possible to import a backup that already exists in the catalog.
