Cannot install NetBackup Client on Windows Server

After  install the NetBackup Client 7  "succesfully" to a Windows server, I'm not able to instal the update to the server. The update (7.0.1) installer only shows enabled the option to "Install to multiple computers on your network".

Now, I know the installation was not succesful because NetBackup is not in the  Start > Programs

Under  path C:\Program Files\VERITAS\  there are only 2 folders: NetBackup and Security and a SWIDTAG file.

But the Symantec NetBackup Client is shown under "Control Panel > Programs  and Features"

I installed the NetBackup client  again. No errors are logged. But the situation is the same.

Client:

Windows Server Std 2008  SP2

SQL Server 2008

Installation type: local

Any ideas of what is causing this problem and what should be done?

At last!  NetBackup is installed. These the steps the engineer did:

    1st try:

    •     Uninstall Backup Exec Remote Agent
    •     Remove  VERITAS keys in the Windows Registry
    •     Disable the User Access Control
    •     Using an domain account

    The installation failed again:

"The Symantec NetBackup Client install was interrupted before it could be completed"

    2do try:

    •     Remove all  NetBackup keys in the Windows Registry
    •     Remove the directory created by NetBackup installer under C:\Windowd\Installer
    •     User Access Control was still disabled
    •     Using local administrator account

This time the installation was successful. Also the update to 7.0.1.

So, I'm able to backup the SQL databases :)

  • Did you remember to right-click on browser.exe and Run as Administrator?

  • Thanks Marianne!

Following your advice, I  Ran as Administrator the browser, this time the  installation ends with the following message "The Symantec NetBackup Client install was interrupted before it could be completed"

I found an Access denied error in the log...  This TechNote described my error:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH129990

The account I'm using has the sufficient rights to create and delete a folder under C:\Windows\Installer. So, I found the folder created by NetBackup installation and deleted it.  After that, I Ran as Administrator the browser one more time.. Unfortunately the  installation ends with the same error:

"The Symantec NetBackup Client install was interrupted before it could be completed"

I found these errors in the log:

08-02-2011,11:25:52 : Successfully cached the cab file.
08-02-2011,11:25:52 : System Error: 5, Access is denied.

This a productive server, I don't want to corrupt its registry. I can not figure out is happening. I already installed 2 servers (Windows 2008) that are part of the same project, using the same user account without any issues.

    I'll  appreciate any help!

  • Please log a support call with Symantec to determine cause of failed installation. They will also assist with correct cleanup procedure before another installation attempt.

  • PLEASE let us know once you've managed to find a REAL solution!

I will gladly move the solution to your update as that will be to the benefit of the greater community.
