Caveat of Disabling Virtual Machine Quiesce

On my really busy VMs, mostly database servers, I was getting a Status 156 because the server was too busy to respond to NetBackup.  If I go into the Vware/Advanced tab in the policy and disable virtual machine quiesce, the job finishes successfully.  What are my vulnerabilities if I leave the setting disabled?  What will I not be able to recover?

NBU 7.6.0.1

vSphre 5.1.0

Windows Server 2008 R2

Thanks in advance,

Randy

  • Hi Rsamore,

I do agree with your concerns however its not recommended to disable this parameter

please verify the below link and notes...

If this option is disabled, the snapshot is created without quiescing I/O on the virtual machine. In this case, you must perform your own checks for data consistency in the backup data.

Caution: Symantec does not recommend that you disable quiesce.

  • Thank you for the response Sri.  I found articles stating the same thing but the articles were all 2 years old or older.  I was wondering if anything had changed with 7.6.

  • Disabling the option and the backup is not consistent anymore. Data may be damaged and the backup is worthless.

  • Thank you both for the great news :)  Back to client based backups.
