Certified Netbackup Version for Backup & Restore of SLES

hi:

My customer is running SAP HANA on Cisco B440-M2 blades with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2.

Customer wants a definitive answer on the following:

  • Which exact version of Netbackup is certified for SAP HANA backup & restore of: SAP HANA Data Files, SAP HANA Log Files & SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2
  • My customer is having SAP HANA running on SPS07 or Patch Revision 70 and it is installed in Cisco B440-M2 Blade Servers running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2
  • Customer wants to be able to quickly Restore SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2 onto a New Cisco B440-M2 Blade Server, follows by Restoring of SAP HANA Data Files & SAP HANA Log Files backup using NETBACKUP during Disaster Recovery  with minimum RTO
  • The Storage Array which is housing the SAP HANA Data & Log Files is EMC VNX5300 accessed via FC Protocol and they will be backing up to EMC Data Domain Hardware Appliance

Thanks.

Bennie

Specifically, SAP HANA support began from version 7.5.0.6 (see page 33).

We'd recommend 7.6.0.1 as it's the "latest and greatest!"

Your array should be compatible - check out page 193 of the HCL:

I'm ignorant on Cisco B440-M2 Blade Servers - assuming we'd consider those "x64?"  If so, you're OK.

"Disaster Recovery  with minimum RTO" depends on actual Recovery Time Objective requirements:

    Definition on Wikipedia:

The recovery time objective (RTO) is the duration of time and a service level within which a business process must be restored after a disaster (or disruption) in order to avoid unacceptable consequences associated with a break in business continuity.[1]

So, RTO is determined by SLA.

Only if the customer can share actual RTO needs can you design a solution.
If server needs to up and functional within one hour for example and the backup took 4 hours, then NetBackup (or any other backup product) is not the right solution. Or maybe when it is coupled with hardware snapshots that can be automated with NBU Snapshot Client option. And sufficient hardware/disk space to cater for multiple snapshots that is linked to RPO.
