client entry

Hi ALL,

I am new to this NBU tool.I have completed my Initial NBU training.I am still reading the manuals.

I have one query. Why we do entries of client on master server if my backups are happening in between media server and client.entry of media server on client and vice versa if allright. But why on Master server.

NBU 7.1

SOLARIS 10

  • for regular file system backups, you can make the backup without having the communication betweent the master server and client... only having the communication between the client and Media server will make it.

but this is not what i personally recommend , i always perfer to have the communication between the Master server and client too..

because this will allow you to manage the Client host properties.. configuration, exlucd lists, etc.....

  • Client Entires on Master and Media server bp.conf is not require...

only the Master and Media server entries should be in the client and not require in master or Media server.

and client needs to have these Master and media servers entries to authorise the server to take the backups.

  • The entries control access. The server list (bp.conf or registry) for all Netbackup machines (master, media, and clients) would have these entries (amongst others).

The first SERVER entry in any server's server list (bp.conf or registry) indicates who the master server is. Each and every server in the environment must have the master at the top of its server list (even the master itself). The master server contacts clients to initiate backups so it needs access to all. It also tells client where their catalogs info is kept if they want to perform a restore.

The  subsequent SERVER entries are for media servers that have access to perform backups of a the specific client.

The CLIENT enrty defines the name of the specific client.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Riann and Nagalla.

I am talking about the /etc /hosts entry on master server. We do eacch entry of client in /etc/hosts under master server and media server of clients.

My query is why we do entry of these clients on master server hosts file?

  • As stated above, the master server contacts clients to initiate backups so it needs access to all. Unless you're using DNS you need a host entry for each client so that the master can contact them.

If you want to backup CLIENTA you need to be able to access it via hostname. If the hostname cannot resolve to an  IP address (via dns or hosts file), how will you be able to contact it?

Master contacts to say start the backups

media server takes over to accept the backups.

  • in another words..

Netbackup servers should able to to communicate with the name that is specified in the Policy clients tab..  to make the successful backups.

entry in the etc/hosts file is the one that would help to resolve the Name to IP address and IP address to Name which is requiered inother to make the communication with the Name.

DNS in the in Enviornmanet also do the same taks.. so if you have the DNS in entireis avaliable in and able to do the name resolution using the DNS, then /etc/hosts entireis is not require..

all the need of /etc/hosts or  DNS is for the name resolutions which is purly the OS task. not for the Netbackup.

  • Thanks.I have also reaad thT for ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES and only for database backup ,Master server contacts the client.

If only filesystem backups are done for clients, no comms are needed between master and client. Here backup selection is sent to media server and comms is limited to media

    server <-> client.
If you backup ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES and/or databases, bi-directional connectivity is needed between master and client for initial job setup before data transfer is passed to media

    server and client.
  • CLIENT_NAME = <Master Name> on Master help your Master Server backup itself. Master server can play Master Server role, some cased it can be Media server also, and also it is always CLIENT for itself. That's reason you mention CLIENT_NAME in the master server's bp.conf.

Note as Nagalla said earlier, you don't need to mention remote Clients Name into Master server.

Hope it clarifies your doubt on Client entry on the Master server.
