Client-side deduplication of Virtual Machines

Hi,

How can I have client-side deduplication of Virtual Machines? We currently perform off-host backups of our remote virtual vsphere 5.0 hosts, but deduplication is happening on MSDP (local site). I would like to have data deduplicated on source before sending it through  the network. Do I need to install Netbackup Client into all of the virtual hosts? I've read about Netbackup PureDisk Virtual Appliance. Would it be the way?

Thanks!

  • We currently have something like this running in production. We have a media server at each remote site for the initial backups. We have created a STU for each one of them with its Disk Pool being our local MSDP in the datacenter. Then in an SLP we do initial backup to a disk pool local to the media server. From there the image is replicated to the MSDP. We do have a client on each of the VM's.

  • Hello Miles,

Adding a media server to remote location seem to be the only way up to now. Thanks for your suggestion.

Not sure I quite understand what this means?
    What is transport method?

If media server with MSDP is also backup host (transport method is SAN), then dedupe will be 'local'.

Not sure if this answers your question?

  • Hi Marianne,

Our scenario is: our master and media server are in the local site. Backup host is the Master Server. In the remote site we have virtual machines with no netbackup client installed. Data is transported via ethernet dedicated link.

In an attempt to backup these hosts we created a policy checking "Perform off-host backup" and using "VMware backup host" in the policy configuration, policy type is "FlashBackup-Windows". Since we don't have Netbackup installed into the clients, I don't know if it is possible to deduplicate date in client-side. For other clients with netbackup installed, dedupliaction works fine.

Would you know if Netbackup PureDisk Virtual Appliance could help us?

    Thanks!
