Complete Backup solution for Solaris 10 server (BESR equivalent for non Windows OS).

Hi All,

I'd like to know if there is a complete backup solution for Solaris 10 environment which backup whole complete system like Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 does on Windows Server (complete disk image backup on the fly / hot backup).

At the moment I just realized that using Backup Exec 2010 + RALUS agent (the agent), it can only backup the file only not even the open files :-( which makes it useless when disaster strikes.

My goal is to be able to restore the server from the backup drive (image deployment type) when there is hardware failure.

Any idea and suggestion please ?

Thanks.
  • Your comment "My goal is to be able to restore the server from the backup drive (image deployment type) when there is hardware failure" sounds like you want to completely restore that server to new, "bare" hardware.

Bare Metal Restore (BMR) is included as part of NetBackup 6.5 and higher, no extra licensing outside of the NetBackup Enterprise Server software.  I believe that is what you want.

Note that you might still encounter some open/locked files that will not get backed up.  You can configure NetBackup (NBU) to wait for those files to become free or skip them; if you *must* back those files up, you can customize some standard scripts that will run at the beginning of the backup that can be used, for instance, to quiesce a database to free up those files, or to run any vendor-supplied utility to make a "hot" copy of the file to another location that can be used to recover after the server is rebuilt.
