Cumulative Incremental Netbackup

Good morning,

I am currently experiencing a backup problem on our file server.

This is a multi TB server. FULL backup takes around 30 hours to back up (it takes place on weekends) We have implemented the cumulative incremental backup week.

Some weeks, the backup will be completed in 1 hour or 2 hours Other weeks it will take 14 - 15 hours to complete.

There aren't as many files modified to save for that long a week.

I've heard of backups based on the archive bit. Can you tell me if in my case it is better to deactivate it?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

We are currently in Netbackup 10.3.0.1, and my file server is in Windows 2012 R2

      Good morning,

      Sorry for the late response.

I just skimmed this note. I'm going to try that. Indeed the backup policy is MS-WINDOWS.

      Best regards

  • What kind of target are you backing to?  If it's a disk target, an MSDP pool, then doing a differential incremental will probably save a lot of time.  Cumulative backups pay back on serial media like tape drives because it minimizes seeking to restore to a particular point in time.  Disk media seeks very easily so the Differential should be more efficient on backup volume & backup time.
