DDBoost/OST NDMP backup traffic w/ media server.

We have a backup job set up to where an NDMP filer is backing up to a DataDomain appliance using DDBoost/OST through a media server that has a 1GB link.  What I think I'm observing is all network traffic is flowing through the media server, rather than directly from the NetApp filer to the DataDomain appliance, which is how DDBoost should work.  I think NDMP might be a factor in that because other instances where I've seen this working involves installing the Netbackup client itself.  The reason I'm asking is because we seem to be getting very poor performance utilizing this method of NDMP backups.  Prior we were using VTL which had a direct fiber connection from the media server to the DataDomain and performance was better then.  I'm a little unclear about how DDBoost works with respect to NDMP so just looking for some advice on that.

  • NDMP will go from filer to media server to DD.  Even if using BOOST.  Boost only allows for less traffic to flow from media server to DD, allowing more concurrent jobs.

You can go direct from filer to DD, though you either use FC over VTL.  Or you use a new feature that is not documented well called "NDMP Server" built into the DD.  (I honestly don't know much about it, nor is my.datadomain, com any help)
